This section will go through and show the final character sprites that were imported into Renpy for my visual novel development.
As well as explain Liliths split identity version character design and sprite.
Lilith split identity design:
Lilith’s split personality design was very significant to the story, thus I wanted to make it impactful and create shock within the player when it appeared on screen. It is the culmination of Lilith’s paranoia and mental anguish, showing both of the personalities wanting to be free. It appears at the end of the game when the player makes the choice to either give into to the delusion and let the other personality take over, or to rethink everything and enable Lilith to recover.
I created a moodboard with pictures from pinterest for inspiration on creating an impactful, body horror design of Lilith. I also included my own initial versions of this design that were featured in E1, as well as the original Lilith character design.

I created this design by working from the orignial character design of Lilith and adding another head to it, with some dripping effect to show that the 2 personalities are separating from eachother. I also added a monstrous looking hand/ claw to the evil side of her to further give the impression of the monster of that personality.

My tutor advised to not rely on excessive blood to show horror, so I developed this design with minimal blood, but an aspect of body horror. I achieved this by using overlays with textured brushes to show a darkness taking over Lilith, and changing the colour of the line art as it moves up the character.
I tried to make this design as impactful as I could, as it will be a somewhat shock/ jumpscare near to the end of the game – whilst also keeping some aspect of mystery as to what is meant to be real and what isn’t.

Final Sprites:

I had to make sure that the character/ expression sprites would all accurately fit into Renpy, as the original designs are full body but they will only appear from about mid thigh up in the game. So, I created a photoshop file to line the characters up as to how they should appear in game – they are all different heights too so this was taken into account.
Then I added all of the expressions to the characters in different layers and exported the characters and expressions together as PNGs – all accurately named to easily import into Renpy.
